The World 3.0

Reflections from the COVID Summit on evidence, incentives, human connection and the purpose of technological change.

📌 In the midst of crisis, there are many billion-dollar opportunities waiting to be tapped but many people won't see those and miss out.

📌 No virus is smarter than humans’ collective wisdom.

📌 Right now there is a severe shortage of “high-level” thought leaders in Blockchain - people who can solve the hardest problems, and do that at scale.

📌 There was a global consensus that we need harmonisation. Convergence via co-operation is the way forward.

📌 Emergent truth and emergent consensus, not of opinion, but of observation and experiment must be the cornerstone of any future blockchain frameworks.

📌 Cherry-picking outliers (single case studies or white papers) from the body of evidence that is establishing a truth and then building blockchain frameworks and legislations on shaky foundations is a big mistake.

📌 Many speakers emphasised on the importance of Evidence-Based Blockchain, with Mary Lacity saying “EBB is needed now more than ever before”.

📌 The era of calling Blockchain a ‘revolution’ is over. Just like any other technology, it has its strengths and limitations. In the World 3.0, its time to be optimistic but also realistic about the potential of distributed ledgers.

📌 COVID has caused a paradigm shift in how we work, educate and network. Hybrid models of physical + online systems will emerge.

📌 We must stop throwing blockchain technology at people. First, tell them the incentives to use it.

📌 Blockchain will replace many “brick and mortar” systems. The era of ‘secluded silos’ is over.

📌 Unless your end goal is to produce an efficient and effective solution that solves a real problem, don't produce it.

📌 To navigate blockchain without robust scientific evidence is like sailing an uncharted sea in turbulent waters.

📌 If we don't become more agile, more connected and more humane, we learnt nothing from this pandemic.

(COVID Summit was organised by the BBA's Centre for Evidence-Based Blockchain and hosted some of the world's most eminent thought leaders, industry experts and academics from 6 continents and 13 different time zones. The summit ran from 9 am to 9 pm BST)
