“Bitcoin is very different to an Argentinian than it is to a New Yorker. You cannot as a British academic tell a Nigerian farmer how to use Bitcoin."
In 2018, I sat down with the world's leading open blockchain expert, Andreas M. Antonopoulos, for an exclusive interview for The #JBBA.
Eight years later, his words still challenge how we think about blockchain.
The same technology can mean profoundly different things to different people. Its relevance depends on their circumstances, their institutions and the problems they need to solve.
For researchers, policymakers and industry leaders, that carries an important lesson: listen to the communities whose lives you hope to improve. Understand their needs before prescribing solutions.
We also discussed financial education, separating evidence from hype, and why research must be accessible.
As Andreas put it:
“…one of the problems we have in academia is that of closed journals, so I am glad that the JBBA is Open Access…”
These two ideas belong together: knowledge should be accessible, and the people applying it should have a voice.
That conviction continues to guide our work at The JBBA.
